Question about Hepatitis Vaccines

I received this question from someone who works in a body art studio:

Hi Elayne, do you advise for or against Hepatitis B vaccinations for piercers and artists? if so would you advise getting A+B or just B?

Thanks for your time. S.

Hi S.,

Well I think it is wise to get the Hep B vaccine, given that there is potential for needlesticks in our work and Hep B is a bloodborne pathogen.

Also, in the US there is a law involved: wherever there is potential for exposure to bloodborne pathogens, an employer has to offer the vaccine to his/her employees and pay for it--and allow them to get it during business hours (OSHA ruling). And the employer must document it. If the vaccine is declined, a declination from must be filed with the employee records.

Since Hep A is not transmitted through blood, it isn't as necessary for a piercer.

Have you taken a bloodborne pathogens class? There's lots of good information in them. I recommend the industry specific class given by David Vidra and associates through Health Educators. In fact, I just took it recently, and it was fantastic.

Hope this is helpful,
Elayne

A Technique Question from a Piercer

I received this message from a Facebook friend:

Elayne, Let me begin this note by telling you that I am a huge fan of yours, and I am extremely thankful for all the hard work that you, Jim Ward, Doug Malloy, Paul King and so many others have done for the industry we are in. If it weren't for you and others like you, body piercing would be no where near where it is now, so THANK YOU!!!
Now then, my question to you:

I have been piercing professionally for 6 years, a good career so far but only a few steps in comparison to yours... When I first began, I used the "piggy-backing" method I saw in your recent video post. I have since moved on and now pierce with like sized jewelry and needles. I was under the impression that the method described was amateur and generally looked down upon, and yet here I see a MASTER PIERCER using it. Now please don't get me wrong, your title of master piercer is correct and very well deserved, I just find it strange. So I come to you with thisa humble question, why do you prefer this method? I have found that the piercings tend to bleed too much when using this method. Are there benefits that I am unaware of? Thank you for your time and any info will be appreciated.

By the way, the "bible" is one of the books in my modification collection that I am most proud of, and I consult it regularly so thank you!!!!

A fan and fellow body modifier, -J.

Fantastic Feedback

I just got this message from a gal I pierced when I was in New Orleans:

Hi Elayne,

How are you?  I'm happy to report that the vertical hood and triangle piercings i got over this summer in NO are healing very well !  Thank you so much you are awesome!  Will you be coming to NY / east coast any time soon ?!?  I'd like to get some more piercings but I won't let any one other than you pierce me!  I waited almost 2 years for the ones you did and it was well worth the wait !  Thanks again.  Hope all is well!

G.

My reply:

Hi G.,

I'm so thrilled to hear that you're happy with your piercings. You just missed me in Philadelphia in August. I was booked solid for 4 days, so I'll definitely be coming back again--probably in the Spring. I can't deal with the cold of the Eastern winter (or even the fall...).

If you would like to be notified when I make travel plans, please sign up for my newsletter in the box on the left lower portion of the page: http://piercingbible.com It is an "opt-in" list, so I can't add you myself. My next piercing visit will be in Dallas. Information is here: http://piercingbible.com/event/2010/11/elayne-angel-piercing-dallas-tx-n...

Looking forward to seeing you and piercing you again! Thanks for your loyalty.

Sincerely,
Elayne

Prince Albert Healing Question (Regarding Sex)

I received this message today:

Hello Elayne,

I have a question for you concerning my Prince Albert piercing. I've had it for about 2 1/2 months now. I was not sexually active for about a month after getting the piercing, but ever since I've resumed sexual activity the piercing gets sore during intercourse.

Last night, after having sex, I noticed that there was blood in the condom I was wearing. The piercing feels absolutely fine when I'm not having sex, it looks completely healed and I can rotate the CBR without any soreness. However, logic would lead me to believe that it is not completely healed- hence the soreness and bleeding from intercourse.

My question is this: is it normal for a Prince Albert piercing to take this long to heal? And should I refrain from sexual activity completely during the remainder of the healtime? Any and all advice would be gladly appreciated. Thank you. H.

Piercing Questions from a Female to Male (FTM) Transsexual

I got this message from a Facebook friend:

Hey Elayne,
I had a bit of a question. What is your take on ftm genital piercings, before any kind lower surgery? I myself being trans and having a few trans friends. I meant to talk to you about this at conference this year, but didnt. I know a lot of guys who also don't want to come in and ask for a "hood" piercing. I was almost considering figuring out another name for them. Also, do you think Triangle piercings are ok? it seems to me the jewelry would have to be rather large to accommodate the larger anatomy and might possibly interfere when they're erect. I also wanted your opinion on doing post op piercings ftm's and mtf. Really, i think you should just do a big article on transgender genital piercings. : ) Thank you for your time and wisdom.

Appreciation from a Piercer

I got some more great piercer feedback. This one is a message from a new Facebook friend:

Elayne,

I have read The Piercing Bible a few times, and I refer to it often. I think it's a really great asset to the industry, it's very important for people curious about piercing to be educated, and be able to tell the difference between a professional piercer and a hack!

I wish it would've been around earlier though, my mom was looking through it and joked that she wished she could have bought me that book back when I was a teenager sticking safety pins in my lips! Haha.

I'm really glad I've had your book handy during my apprenticeship, I don't think it's possible to be a good piercer without being an informed piercee. Thank you so much for writing it!

-Madeline

Madeline,

Thanks so much for all of the great feedback; I really appreciate it! I wish it had been around sooner too. It took about five years to write it!

Are you familiar with Pain Magazine? I write a monthly column for the magazine. It is called "Ask Angel" and I answer questions from piercers. You can find archives on their website here:
http://www.painmag.com/archives.php
my article is always on page 16.

If you have any questions that aren't answered in my book, feel free to send me a message.

Take care,
Elayne

Piercer's Inspiration

I just finished reading your article in Pain Mag this month not ten minutes ago. :) and before you are bombarded with comments and questions, let me just tell you how much I value your opinion, your ethics, and your procedures for piercing. I'm sure you hear this often, but YOU are a big reason I became a piercer. Thank you so much for being such a big part of this industry and being so open with your advice.

And are you going to be in Arizona anytime soon? I want my triangle done, but I do not trust anyone else to do it... even my fellow local piercers. ^_^

My reply:

Thanks so much for the positive feedback; I'm thrilled to hear that you find my information helpful.

I would be delighted to pierce you but I'm not entirely certain what my upcoming travel plans will be. If you would like to be notified when I make travel plans, please sign up for my newsletter in the box on the left lower portion of the page: http://piercingbible.com It is an "opt-in" list, so I can't add you mysef.

Feel free to send me some clear, close-up photos so I can give you an online consult to determine if you're anatomically suited to a triangle. Information on this page of my website: http://piercingbible.com/female-genital-piercings#Photos
explains the images I'll need to see.

If you would like to watch me performing piercings, you can see videos of me piercing at
http://clips4sale.com/10557  They aren't "how-to" videos, per se, but you can see exactly how and where I place piercings, and how I do them.
