Piercing

Article on Female Genital Piercings

I found that The Piercing Bible had been quoted in this article in The Daily Cardinal, the University of Wisconsin online newspaper. I was delighted to see that a great deal of factual information was included and that the piercers  were quoted in the piece were knowledgeable and provided accurate facts. For example, this part, where I'm quoted:

Elayne Angel, the author of The Piercing Bible who estimates she has performed over 40,000 piercings, echoes this last point: “I have had more than one client confide in me that she had never had an orgasm ... until after I had performed her [piercing]!” However, every one of these experts is quick to note that the clitoris is usually not what’s pierced in a “clit piercing.” Instead, it is the clitoral hood that is bedazzled. The clitoral hood is the fold of tissue that covers the clitoris. Since the clitoris itself is so highly innervated, Ziebell cautioned, “If one false move is made, all feeling is lost forever, and I don’t want that on my conscience.” Indeed, Piercer X explained many women who come in requesting “clit piercings” are actually looking for a clitoral hood piercing: “I sometimes spend part of the time going through the names of the hills and valleys down there so I’m sure I know what [a client] wants,” he said.

The piercer mentions how frequently women requesting "clit piercings' actually want hood piercings. I've definitely found that to be the case. Also, the piercer said that he does 95% vertical clitoral hood piercings (VCH), and that is similar to the percentage I do (vs. horizontal hood piercings). I'm not sure why he or she didn't want to be named, preferring to be referred to as "Piercer X," but at least the information was sound!

I Wasn't Sure What To Think

When I first saw the headline of a review on this site:

DO NOT Buy The Piercing Bible

It made my stomach drop. I thought I was about to read my first bad review. Then it went on: Do not waste your time buying the Piercing Bible if you have  done over 40,000 piercings, was a medical liaison to the Association of Professional Piercers, and ran the only body piercing studio in the French Quarter in New Orleans for 12 straight years.  Also, do not waste your time buying the Piercing Bible if you simply want to continue sucking at being a piercer or a piercee. And I began to realize that it was actually a very positive review! It went on: If you have done all of the above things, than your name must be Elayne Angel; author of The Piercing Bible and you should probably just ignore this post as it will be completely useless to you. If you answered no to ANY of the above questions and you want to be a better piercer or piercee, than you need to get this book.  Period.  I don’t care if you’ve done 39,999 piercings and this afternoon you’ll hit your 40,000th with that belly button you have booked…you still need to get this book.

More Great (Brief) Reviews

Customer Reviews: Get this book. Even if you are already well-informed about piercings, aftercare, etc., its a very handy resource to have around. It talks about piercings in plain language that everyone can understand. It also talks about what to look for in a studio, in a piercer, what to do if your piercing acts up, and all sorts of other important things. Dispelling Piercing Myths

I found that I'd been quoted in someone's blog post today about the Prince Albert piercing. I helped to settle the case on whether Prince Albert himself actually had a Prince Albert piercing (he didn't):

Another thing: according to The Piercing Bible by Elayne Angel (p. 156), the healing time for a Prince Albert is "4 to 8 weeks or longer". Now, in a time when infection could not be reliably controlled, who is going to pierce themselves anywhere - let alone somewhere that delicate? Are you beginning to smell a hoax? In her book, Angel confirms my suspicions that Prince Albert did not have a Prince Albert, as does Matthew Sweet in Inventing the Victorians. So why do so many people think he did? Where did this "dressing ring" thing get started? According to Angel, these stories were made up by a man who called himself Doug Malloy (real name Richard Simonton). He is considered the father of modern piercing culture in the US.

Sexy Nipple Piercings!

I received this email from a woman who obviously found her piercings to have a great impact on her quality of life and self esteem:

Nipple Piercing

I recently contributed an article about nipple piercing to a great website called the-clitoris.com. Previously I'd let them post information I'd written about female genital piercings. You can find the nipple piercing article here, and for convenience it is reprinted below:

Nipple Piercing

The contrast of metal jewelry through the flesh of a nipple is truly exotic and striking. Nipple piercing defines the region, frames the tissue, and makes the nipple stand at attention (though it doesn’t necessarily cause the nipple to remain erect at all times). Prior to the early 1990s, when navel piercings became popular, nipples were the most prevalent location for body piercings. Modern piercing enthusiasts—particularly in the gay and SM subcultures—explored the erotic potential of their bodies and started what has become the current style of nipple piercing. These days, people from all walks of life are experiencing the delights of this piercing. For some, it is simply an aesthetic preference or fashion statement; for others it reigns as a favorite in the realm of sexual and sensual pleasures.
