Now Available ! Jim Ward's New Book: Running the Gauntlet

Running The Gauntlet Book Cover

In Running the Gauntlet pioneer Jim Ward provides a captivating in-depth narrative on the origins of the modern body piercing industry. I was completely spellbound by Ward’s uncensored personal history, and his account of establishing a unique business that has brought genuine change to contemporary culture. Prior to Jim Ward’s founding of Gauntlet Enterprises, piercing was a little-known activity practiced by people on the fringes of society. Now, as a result of his actions, there are piercing studios all around the globe and millions of pierced individuals. The quantity of “firsts” that are under Jim Ward’s belt (figuratively, and perhaps literally) is remarkable.

This volume would stand on its own as a text, but the phenomenal collection of historical images throughout the book transported me on a journey across time right along with the author. The rich visuals make the story accessible and wholly satisfying.

Even those who are not involved in body piercing would love this book because the tale itself is so intriguing, and so compellingly and candidly recounted. Don’t miss this must-read memoir!

Appreciation from a Piercer

I got some more great piercer feedback. This one is a message from a new Facebook friend:

Elayne,

I have read The Piercing Bible a few times, and I refer to it often. I think it's a really great asset to the industry, it's very important for people curious about piercing to be educated, and be able to tell the difference between a professional piercer and a hack!

I wish it would've been around earlier though, my mom was looking through it and joked that she wished she could have bought me that book back when I was a teenager sticking safety pins in my lips! Haha.

I'm really glad I've had your book handy during my apprenticeship, I don't think it's possible to be a good piercer without being an informed piercee. Thank you so much for writing it!

Madeline,

Thanks so much for all of the great feedback; I really appreciate it! I wish it had been around sooner too. It took about five years to write it!

Are you familiar with Pain Magazine? I write a monthly column for the magazine. It is called "Ask Angel" and I answer questions from piercers. You can find archives on their website here:
http://www.painmag.com/archives.php
my article is always on page 16.

If you have any questions that aren't answered in my book, feel free to send me a message.

Take care,
Elayne

Elayne Angel in Curve Magazine

I was interviewed for an article in Curve Magazine about piercing. They put it in the "Health Advice" column of their 20th Anniversary issue dated April 2010.

The article begins:
This year curve celebrates our 20th anniversary by looking back at the women who inspired us then. Twenty years ago, Elayne Angel was a master piercer at West Hollywood’s The Gauntlet, the first piercing specialty studio in the U.S. You may know her best as the woman who popularized the tongue piercing.
