Love of Body Piercing

I got a fantastic message on my YouTube account:

I just wanted to thank you for writing The Piercing Bible, it has helped me grow as a piercer and develop a deep love for piercing. I started piercing as a way to get my foot in the door to the tattoo industry but my teacher put her heart and soul into teaching me how to pierce and always talked about you and your book. I have ordered two copies of your book, one for my home and one for the shop I work at. Thank you so much for inspiring so many people and for indirectly helping me find my first and second loves one being piercing and the second my teacher, we are now engaged to be married. thank you

My reply:

Thanks so much for your message and congratulations to you and your fiance!

That sure gave me a warm fuzzy feeling! I'm thrilled to hear that my book has proved to have such a positive impact on your career and your perspective on piercing. I can't say I ever imagined that my book would ever be responsible (even indirectly) for a romantic connection. I'm so happy that you shared your good news with me.

Send my warmest regards and respect to your mentor/fiance. I wish the two of you a lifetime of happiness together.

Septum Piercing and Stuff

I received this message from a reader:

Elayne, the book was amazing!  I always had a feeling that the old shop I was going to was not the cleanest or most knowledgeable place in the world, and now I am certain haha!  You have really opened my eyes to a lot of things that I just didn't look at before.  I plan on enrolling in my classes soon, and hopefully with what I learned from your book I will have a bit of a head start above my competition for an apprenticeship.  Also, your aftercare section was great.  I have heard a ton of varying viewpoints, but never any reason other than "it just works."  The piercer who did my lip told me to use anti-bacterial soap and peroxide to clean my lip ring, and now I no longer have it because it wouldn't heal.  I wish I would have found your book sooner!  It probably would have been able to keep it!

Also, I found a video on YouTube after reading your book that you might be able to use as a "how not to pierce" guide.  Here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bYU4fLYIVk

Any way, thanks again for everything.  You are the best.  I am going to be far more picky when I get my septum pierced and when I look for my apprenticeship.  Thank you so very much!

Alan

Apprentice Appreciation

I got this message from an apprentice who was given my book on her first day at work:

I am an apprentice piercing artist here in northern Michigan and I have to say your book has honestly become my bible! It is with me at all times at work. I have to thank you for writing this book and making it available. My boss handed it to me my first day of work when I was busy milling through piercing supply catalogs, by the end of that night I had read the entire book. I am currently reading it again actually!

I have just typed up all of my aftercare sheets, and they all have a simple comment at the bottom "This aftercare program contains information obtained from "The Piercing Bible" by Elayne Angel." I hope this little comment catches my customers interest to read your book as well :)

I am hoping to become APP certified and I am doing everything in my power to become the best piercer I can, thank you!

Helping a Future Piercing Apprentice

Here's my exchange with a young man who plans to seek an apprenticeship for body piercing:

Can you tell me if there is anyone in the Kansas City Missouri area who might be taking on an apprentice?  Also, I am 25 years old.  Is it too late for me to start learning?  I am committed to taking the CPR, blood pathogen classes, and I am going to buy your book as soon as I hear back from you.  Thanks in advance for your time!

The Piercing Bible--An Important Tool

I just got another great message from a Facebook friend:

Hello! I wanted to say 'thank you' for providing me with the most important tool in my apprenticeship....your book. My mentor was a great help, but many times I found myself seeing something that I just felt was not right. I use your book to guide me in those situations. As the author, I hope that it will make your day knowing that the pages are dog-eared and it has barely lasted the length of my apprenticeship. Thank you !

My reply:

Hi Deena,
Thank you so much for taking the time to let me know that my book has proved so useful to you. I really appreciate it!

If there are questions you have that weren't answered in the book, feel free to ask....

Sincerely,
Elayne

"Required Reading"

I ran into this post in which The Piercing Bible was described as "Required Reading" on the topic of body modification:

This entry is more geared towards apprentices and those into the “past” surrounding our body modification industry/community,etc. However this is also very much available, immensely encouraged, for those out there who are clients/consumers or just general people interested in Body Modification. I believe these to be required reading (regardless if you agree or disagree with whats written), specifically for the typical apprentice that is starting out. They should read them and then approach their instructor/teacher/mentor and spark up discussions and healthy debates regarding this stuff.

Two books were listed in the post, (one other in addition to my own). I'm honored by the company, as the other book was Shannon Larratt's Opening Up Body Modification Interviews 1995-2008.

Global Influence

I just received an email from a woman in Australia and my book has had an effect on her:

Dear Elayne, I have been reading a preview of your book on google books. First, thank you for allowing the preview to be posted. From what I have read, I know I need to go and purchase the book! I am a 25 year old girl (woman?), who, after much soul searching and deliberation have decided to put my nursing degree on hold and pursue body piercing as a career. Through my research I have realised I have much to learn before I can even set foot in a piercing studio as an apprentice. I stumbled upon your book after a recommendation to visit safepiercing.org. I found your writing to be clear and concise, and explained everything in detail without rambling. By reading your book I have become more confident in my desire to become a body piercer, and you have helped me understand the link between the piercer and the piercee. I know I have lots (and lots) to learn, but I think that I may be able to follow my dream. Without ever meeting me, you have played a part in this. And for that I thank you. Leah NSW, Australia

My response: Hi Leah, Thanks so much for the positive feedback. I'm thrilled that my book has proved helpful to you. I wish you all the best. Sincerely, Elayne
