Best of the Guestbook

The design for my website www.piercingbible.com is just about to be updated, and that's surely for the best. But, one slightly sad (but unavoidable) thing that is that my old Guestbook will be no more, and the posts will be unavailable. Some related good news is that all of my previous blog posts will still be available in the archives on the updated site. So, I've decided to make a blog post "Best of the Guestbook" to preserve some of the entries. Here we go!

I'm Back!

It has been quite some time since I posted as I was on the road without internet access. I had a fantastic trip to Milan, Italy where I taught a 3-hour course on oro-facial anatomy and basic piercing at the APTPI Congress. The audience was comprised primarily of piercers from Italy, though there were individuals from other countries as well. I taught the class (which included a PowerPoint presentation containing over 250 slides, and video of me performing piercings) in English. They provided professional interpreters and the audience listened to the translation on headphones. It was really cool, but I had a little bit of stress while we tried three different computers and couldn't get my PowerPoint to play. Finally they got it working. Whew! While in Milan I had the pleasure of visiting the Duomo, which was incredible. (Photos below.) The host hotel was great, but it was located a little bit outside the city, so we didn't get to see much of Milan while there. Bethra Szumski was my travel companion. She is the owner of Virtue and Vice in Atlanta, Georgia; and Pain and Wonder in Athens, Georgia. She's also the secretary for the Association of Professional Piercers, and she taught a class in Grounding and Bedside Manner. Following the conference we caught a ride with some friends from Slovenia and went for a visit in their home town of Koper. We had an incredible whirlwind trip and they showed us Piran, a beautiful old beach town on the Adriatic Sea, and also gigantic caves in Postojna, Slovenia.

"Doctors and Nurses Educate Yourselves!"

Posted December 9, 2009, 1:56 PM EST: The Piercing Bible, Definitive Guide is excellent source. As an RN, I have worked in our emergency department and I prepare patients for surgery. I educate my patients and colleagues regarding body piercing. I have found Elayne Angel to be my educator. Her extensive knowledge and professionalism have given me the tools to better teach others. I quote from her book, and try to help remove the stigma associated with people who choose to adorn their bodies. I HIGHLY recommend this book to ALL, but also encourage my fellow healthcare professionals to be informed!

Article on Female Genital Piercings

I found that The Piercing Bible had been quoted in this article in The Daily Cardinal, the University of Wisconsin online newspaper. I was delighted to see that a great deal of factual information was included and that the piercers  were quoted in the piece were knowledgeable and provided accurate facts. For example, this part, where I'm quoted:

Elayne Angel, the author of The Piercing Bible who estimates she has performed over 40,000 piercings, echoes this last point: “I have had more than one client confide in me that she had never had an orgasm ... until after I had performed her [piercing]!” However, every one of these experts is quick to note that the clitoris is usually not what’s pierced in a “clit piercing.” Instead, it is the clitoral hood that is bedazzled. The clitoral hood is the fold of tissue that covers the clitoris. Since the clitoris itself is so highly innervated, Ziebell cautioned, “If one false move is made, all feeling is lost forever, and I don’t want that on my conscience.” Indeed, Piercer X explained many women who come in requesting “clit piercings” are actually looking for a clitoral hood piercing: “I sometimes spend part of the time going through the names of the hills and valleys down there so I’m sure I know what [a client] wants,” he said.

The piercer mentions how frequently women requesting "clit piercings' actually want hood piercings. I've definitely found that to be the case. Also, the piercer said that he does 95% vertical clitoral hood piercings (VCH), and that is similar to the percentage I do (vs. horizontal hood piercings). I'm not sure why he or she didn't want to be named, preferring to be referred to as "Piercer X," but at least the information was sound!

The Piercing Bible Featured

The subject of body jewelry as it relates to airport security was discussed on the Travelite Blog. This is what it said by way of introducing me as the expert quoted in the article:
One person who would know is professional body piercer Elayne Angel. Elayne is not only covered in various forms of ink and metal herself, but she is also one of the pioneers in professional body piercing, a field she personally helped expand decades ago. Elayne has served multiple terms on the board of the Association of Professional Piercers as an advocate for field safety, and her most recent project has been authoring The Piercing Bible, the definitive guide for consumers and professional body piercers.
Check it out. There's lots of great information througout the site, and if you travel, be assured you'll find plenty of great tips and ideas.

I'm so excited to see a book like this being published. I was really impressed by how neutral it remained without leaving things out. Its really hard to write on this subject because so much of piercing is personal preference, but you did a fantastic job! xo- Cj
Cj makes a good point there, because primarily the book does share my opinions (due to a short supply of "substantive research studies, statistical analyses, and other definitive resource materials related to body piercing" as it says in The Piercing Bible. I feel proud to have expressed them while still seeming "neutral"--that's tricky to be sure! It is great to hear that.

On Starting Over

I gave a brief interview about starting over (after Hurricane Katrina) and it was posted here along with a number of other highly uplifting stories. Here's mine: Elayne Angel I had a successful business in the French Quarter of New Orleans for over 12 years. Unfortunately, it closed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. My husband and I spent a modest sum and moved into a home in the Yucatan of Mexico. In this new, quiet environment I applied myself to writing a book “The Piercing Bible” on my area of expertise. The book has been published (by Ten Speed/Random House) and now my job is promoting it online and via book signings around the US. I networked with everyone I knew to let them know that I was writing a book and I got lucky: I have a friend whose brother works in publishing. He heard about my project and took an interest in it. He was instrumental in getting my proposal and sample chapters to a few major publishers. Without his assistance, I'm not sure how long it might have taken to get published. http://piercingbible.com To give credit where credit is due, my friend mentioned above is Caitlin McDiarmid, the Administrator for the Association of Professional Piercers. And the instrumental help was given to me by her brother, Mark. Here's to the McDiarmids for all of their amazing support!
