On Starting Over

I gave a brief interview about starting over (after Hurricane Katrina) and it was posted here along with a number of other highly uplifting stories. Here's mine: Elayne Angel I had a successful business in the French Quarter of New Orleans for over 12 years. Unfortunately, it closed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. My husband and I spent a modest sum and moved into a home in the Yucatan of Mexico. In this new, quiet environment I applied myself to writing a book “The Piercing Bible” on my area of expertise. The book has been published (by Ten Speed/Random House) and now my job is promoting it online and via book signings around the US. I networked with everyone I knew to let them know that I was writing a book and I got lucky: I have a friend whose brother works in publishing. He heard about my project and took an interest in it. He was instrumental in getting my proposal and sample chapters to a few major publishers. Without his assistance, I'm not sure how long it might have taken to get published. http://piercingbible.com To give credit where credit is due, my friend mentioned above is Caitlin McDiarmid, the Administrator for the Association of Professional Piercers. And the instrumental help was given to me by her brother, Mark. Here's to the McDiarmids for all of their amazing support!

Book Signing in Hollywood

I'm back home in Mexico now and catching up after being in the US for the past two weeks. My visit was a delight and a smashing success. The final night of the trip, I had a book signing for The Piercing Bible at the Antebellum Gallery in Hollywood. I signed plenty of books, and enjoyed the company of my friends and family. In attendance were several dear friends from high school, my parents, and many more. It was wonderful! If you were there: thanks for coming! If you missed it--I hope to catch you next time.

Interview

I did an interview about The Piercing Bible with Cloud from The Pierced Consumer. Here is her introduction to it:
Just Get It! Let me introduce you to the best reference a pierced consumer could have: The Piercing Bible, a book by Elayne Angel. There’s nothing else like it out there, and no one but Angel could have written this book.  I know she has worked very hard on it, and I am bursting with pride for her.  It’s a fantastic book for everyone interested in body piercing, and I do urge everyone to pick up a copy. In the interest of disclosure, I had a small part in the conceptualization of the project.  I knew we needed a book like this, and I’m so excited to finally have it. I’m not going to do a “review,” because I can’t be unbiased, although I plan at least one more  blog post on the book, more content-related.  For right now, allow me to introduce Ms. Elayne Angel, piercer, author, a pivotal figure in modern body piercing, and not the least to me, my friend.

In My Hands

I'm SO excited! Guess what I've got? Finally: a copy of The Piercing Bible. For the first time, I've been able to see, hold, and read a finished copy of the book--just like the one you'll get when you place an order. It looks GREAT! The format looks a little bigger than I imagined it, and the color on the cover is tinged with a tad of purple (though I'll admit that I lobbied for a more punchy purple color). Opening up the box...Seeing the books for the first time I opened the box and lifted the book--hefted it really, to feel its pleasant and considerable weight. Smiling, I took a look at the front and back covers, then thumbed through the whole thing and heard the sound of the paper, as I took a big whiff of the fresh paper and ink. I did everything but lick the thing; I wanted (needed, even) to experience my book with every possible sense I have. What a delight! I also got another mini pre-review from one of the reviewers:

Research on Male Genital Piercings

If you have male genital piercings and wish to participate in a research study about them, go to this URL and click on the text "Survey for men who have genital piercing." My esteemed colleague, Dr. Myrna Armstrong, a professor at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, has been participating in scientific research about piercings and the people who wear them for many years. It is wonderful that these subjects are being taken more seriously by the academic and medical communities. Dr. Armstrong completed a similar survey of women with genital piercings, and I recently reviewed the manuscript containing the findings of the study. It was very interesting indeed! It will be submitted for publication in a nursing journal. This is the introduction to the survey from the site referenced above:
People get pierced for many reasons. The purpose of this survey is to ask about experiences with your genital piercing (s). For this study, body piercing, such as a genital piercing is defined as the insertion of sharp implements to create an opening for decorative ornaments such as jewelry. There are no anticipated risks to answering the questions. This nursing study can assist health care providers in giving advice to other people who have or are considering genital piercing. Your completion of the survey indicates your consent to participate in this study. Note, some of these questions address some common myths about people with piercings. Please do not be offended. We are trying to obtain accurate information so these myths can be addressed. Please answer the questions honestly so we might have a good description of men with genital piercings.
If you qualify, please participate or send the information to someone who can!

The Piercing Bible is Almost Here!

My editor told me that The Piercing Bible inventory has arrived at the warehouse, and that she'd send me a copy this week. I am so excited!! I can't wait to see the finished product. She also had me notify my contacts who are planning to review the book that they were going to be shipped out shortly. Entering this next phase is so thrilling! Oh, and I got so excited this weekend when I was searching for something about piercing when I ran into my very own words on Google Books. The Piercing Bible is on there (well, about 30% of the book). Check it out! Please feel free to let me know your thoughts and comments.

Emu Oil Triumphs Again!

If you've read much of what I've written about piercing, chances are you've run into some mention of emu oil. I think it is fantastic for healing everything, including body piercings (whether new and healing, in the process of stretching, or having a flare up). I got a fantastic email today from a woman who used it to heal her son's burns:
Elayne! I hope things are going superbly down in the Yucatan with your honey. I have to tell you, We miss you!!!! that would be the entire piercing community in the united states. I still wish I had been able to come down to NOLA before you closed and have the honor of having you do my triangle. Thanks to your recommedations, I flew out to Inifinite in Philly and had the esteemed Kevin Jump perform it for me. Its stretched to a 4 gauge and honestly I don't even wear my VCH anymore (although I could and have) because I love my triangle so much! I got the chance to spend the day with Jen and she is just a love! We shared the miseries of the east coast attitude. LOL Anyways, the reason why I am writing to you is different. Not piercing related persay, but related to you. Back in the day when I  was working on piercings and healing I practically absorbed everything you wrote. Including the information about emu oil. I followed every link, I read every article. and thankfully, I did! This past fall, my son was being a stupid teenager. and to make a fairly long story short, he ended up being burned on all four extremities from a spray paint can exploding. The paint was on fire and it stuck to anywhere he had bare skin. He was burned over 30% of his body. He was lifeflighted to Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh and lodged in the pediatric burn ICU. Thankfully he didn't need skin grafts but it was a long agonizing painful process.

Another Interview

Yesterday I received a phone call from Neil Steinberg, a columnist for the Chicago Sun Times. He is planning to do an article about the popularity of female genital piercings. Apparently, he'd been in touch with the woman from the media relations office of Loyola Health Systems (see my previous post). When I told him that I was not only the Medical Liaison for the Association of Professional Piercers, but also the woman who literally "wrote the book" on body piercing, he said maybe he'd hold the story until my formal book release in May. That would be great! I'll be keeping an eye on the Sun Times to see whether he does that or not. I always get a kick out of the way people respond when I tell them how many clients get genital piercings from the demographic of older, more "conservative" individuals who do not have any other body art!
