Genital Piercing

VCH Piercing Complications

I received this message from a piercee:

I got a vch done about a month ago and last night I noticed a red blood bubble kinda of on the top by the ball could this be a keloid forming? It's bleeding and gets stuck to my underwear it's kind of like tissue idk what it is really I was just wondering if you could help me out pls as in what to do...thanks D.

Hi D.,
It is hard to evaluate without seeing it, but that doesn't sound like a keloid. It sounds more like it might be a granuloma. What did your piercer say?

Feel free to send some clear, close-up photos so I can evaluate your piercing.

Here's part of what it says in my book, The Piercing Bible, about granulomas:

An unattractive, scary-looking growth can form at one or both openings of your
piercing due to irritation. If it is dark red and resembles raw hamburger, you probably
have a granuloma. It may not be as sore as it looks, but it might bleed easily or drain
clear fluid. Navels are more prone to granulomas than most other body piercings. They
are not always indicative of a need to give up on your piercing (though your doctor is
apt to tell you otherwise); some piercings heal successfully following a bout or two with
such growths. You must determine whether your irritation is from jewelry that is of
poor quality or improperly sized or shaped, or perhaps from other external forces. That
factor must be adjusted if you are to have any chance of healing.

Sometimes performing four to six saline soaks daily will result in an improvement of
bumps, irritation, or troubled healing. See chapter 16, “Trouble and Troubleshooting,”
for more details on granulomas and other types of healing problems.

On page 206 you can find more information about dealing with this problem.

Do you know if you're wearing internally threaded jewelry? (See attached image.)

Piercing Photos--The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

(Note: The photos are NOT shown in that order!)

It seems as though this will never end! I keep getting messages from women with botched genital piercings.

Here's one I marked with the correct placement. As you can see from the dots I put on the image, the piercer was nowhere near the correct location.

INCORRECT PLACEMENT

Here's another. Not only is the piercing angled far off to the side, this piercee told me that the piercing came through under her clitoris (instead of under her hood)!

If you're a piercer and you're doing genital piercings without training, knowledge or skill, I beg you PLEASE STOP!

A Hood Surface Piercing From New Zealand

Here's an exchange I had with a woman in New Zealand:

She wrote:

I know you are unlikely to travel to New Zealand so I went ahead and had a vch piercing performed locally. I thought I had asked the piercer all the right questions but I suspect he has got it wrong. I couldn't find anyone at all who uses a receiving tube but found someone who doesn't use clamps. Thought I was doing the right thing. At the moment I have a 12g ring with captive ball. It has healed well but there is now skin and flesh behind the ring. What should I do? I have a friend who is prepared to redo it for me - what are the risks? She has a copy of your book :) E

Hi E.,

Before doing anything else, I'd suggest you get her to lend you the book so that you can become well educated.

I'm not sure what you mean by "there is skin and flesh behind the ring"--can you send a clear, close-up photo or two so I can evaluate your current placement. What makes you think it is placed incorrectly?

If you think yours is improperly placed, that would be a reason to redo it. But if your friend is not a trained professional piercer, I HIGHLY advise against having her pierce you--even if she has a copy of my book (it is not a "how-to-pierce" book!).

Dear Elayne,

Yes, Yet ANOTHER Surface VCH Piercing

Another Surface VCHI got yet another email about a surface VCH piercing:

Hey Elayne,
I'm sure you hear this often but your site is great, very informative...I had never stopped to think twice about genital piercing beyond the usual 'eek, not there' but after learning on your site (don't even remember what took me there in the first place) that it didn't have to be the actual clit itself pierced I was all for it. Unfortunately, I was so excited I went to the nearest female (husbands requirement) body piercer and had it done. Seemed fine at first but soon noticed it was more shallow of a piercing than I believe is correct (pic attached) and I am pretty sure I have plenty more hood that could have went into, not to mention it doesn't rest against the clit and there seems to be way too much barbell exposed (I think it just a standard barbell and that's the usual for this piercing right?) Oh and I'm not positive but it seems as if it is migrating though my husband says he doesn't notice..

I had noticed you will be in TX soon and would love to go there so you could fix this...as well as do both nipples (hoping will increase their sensitivity, breastfed 2 babies and my daughter was a lil monster about it!!) and repierce my navel too. Too bad for me I can't afford to spend that much on travel and piercings when I have a family and bills to pay. I was curious if you ever had plans to come to Kansas?

Leave Jewelry In!

I received the following message through the contact page of this website:

Thank you for all of you're info and sharing because of your page. I found a piercer that was so amazing asked questions which she readily answered and got my VCH done and it is fabulous I love it. What I'd like to know is, its been almost a year since I've had mine and I'm going to my annual checkup and would like to remove it for probably 2 hours or so. How quickly does a VCH piercing close or get tighter to make it difficult placing the jewellery back in?

My reply:

Surface VCH Piercing (with photo)

I received this message from a reader:

Dear Elayne,

I'm a huge fan of your work and book! THe Piercing Bible has helped me decide to get a VCH because of all the benefits it described.

Sadly, I made a poor judgement call when I got it done yesterday. I did not go to my usual piercer, as it was quite expensive at his shop and I didn't want to wait to get it done. Instead, I opted for a shop where a friend of mine got his PA done and he assured me that they did a good job. He has had no problems with his PA.

After the procedure, I went to my boyfriend's house and went to the bathroom with a mirror to admire my new piercing. I was slightly horrified to find out that the bottom bead on the barbell does not rest under my hood, but slightly above it and the bead does not touch my clitoris at all. What should I do? I would really appreciate a reply, as I have no idea if I will recieve any stimulation with this piercing because of where the barbell is.

Thank you so much for your time,
A.

Hi A.,

Sorry to hear about your botched piercing. It is unfortunately VERY common.

If you're not happy with the placement, the jewelry should be removed as soon as possible to let it heal up so the area is minimally affected if you decide to get the piercing done properly. If the jewelry is not touching your clitoris (the way a properly placed VCH does) then you cannot expect to receive any additional stimulation from it.

You may wish to discuss this with the piercer and see if you could get your money back. Make sure to take a photo of the misplaced piercing if you plan to take it out before you approach the studio.

Good luck,

Prince Albert Healing Question (Regarding Sex)

I received this message today:

Hello Elayne,

I have a question for you concerning my Prince Albert piercing. I've had it for about 2 1/2 months now. I was not sexually active for about a month after getting the piercing, but ever since I've resumed sexual activity the piercing gets sore during intercourse.

Last night, after having sex, I noticed that there was blood in the condom I was wearing. The piercing feels absolutely fine when I'm not having sex, it looks completely healed and I can rotate the CBR without any soreness. However, logic would lead me to believe that it is not completely healed- hence the soreness and bleeding from intercourse.

My question is this: is it normal for a Prince Albert piercing to take this long to heal? And should I refrain from sexual activity completely during the remainder of the healtime? Any and all advice would be gladly appreciated. Thank you. H.

Piercing Questions from a Female to Male (FTM) Transsexual

I got this message from a Facebook friend:

Hey Elayne,
I had a bit of a question. What is your take on ftm genital piercings, before any kind lower surgery? I myself being trans and having a few trans friends. I meant to talk to you about this at conference this year, but didnt. I know a lot of guys who also don't want to come in and ask for a "hood" piercing. I was almost considering figuring out another name for them. Also, do you think Triangle piercings are ok? it seems to me the jewelry would have to be rather large to accommodate the larger anatomy and might possibly interfere when they're erect. I also wanted your opinion on doing post op piercings ftm's and mtf. Really, i think you should just do a big article on transgender genital piercings. : ) Thank you for your time and wisdom.
T.
