Problems with Vertical Clitoral Hood (VCH) Piercing (almost 1 year later)

I received a message from a woman who experienced a problem with a Vertical Clitoral Hood (VCH) piercing that was almost a year old:

VCH Piercing with bump under top ball

I've recently noticed a smallish bump under the top ball of the bar in my VCH piercing.  It isn't painful to the touch, I really can't feel it at all, and nothing's coming out of it, but it's visibly noticeable .  I've had the piercing for almost a year now and it healed easily without any issues at first, this is really recent.  I have been taking the jewelry out for short periods of time while getting laser hair removal treatments, could is have prompted my body to start producing scar tissue? I got a taper to make the jewelry removal / reinsertion process easier thinking it might be a cause or contributing factor to the issue, but I'm not sure if I should seek out a doctor's opinion (or a piercer's?) I'm afraid a doctor will just be piercing-negative and tell me to take it out.  Any advice is appreciated!

Quality Body Jewelry vs. Junk Novelty Body Jewelry (For Hood or Bellybutton)

I received a message from a woma who wanted to put a "belly button ring" in her  vertical clitoral hood (VCH) piercing.

I just have a quick question. I got my VCH done back in the beginning of June. I was just wondering if it was safe to put a standard belly button ring in the VCH piercing, or does it require a completely different kind of ring? I was also wondering if it would be too soon to change it? It's been a very painless process and I was able to be sexually active a week after getting it pierced with no complications. Thanks for you time.

My reply:

Bleeding and Bruised Tongue Piercing

I received a message from a woman who had concerns about her recent tongue piercing:

bruised tongue after piercingOkay so I got my tongue pierced Tuesday and this is how it looks not on Friday. Is that just bruising? Is it normal? It bleeds whenever I sleep so I think I'm just biting it...my boyfriend had his pierced a couple months ago and it healed completely different...do I need to go see the piercer?

My reply:
Bleeding, bruising and swelling are all normal consequences of piercing. I couldn't tell for sure, but it didn't look very swollen, so it seems yours is doing the first of the two more than the last. It is more common for the tongue to swell instead, but your reaction isn't necessarily abnormal.

That said, it couldn't hurt to pay  your piercer a visit. They ca get a lot clearer look at it than I can from here.

Nipple Healing Problems and Solutions

Below is my correspondence with a young woman who is having trouble healing her nipple piercings. They've been taking an extended period of time to heal, and get bumps (possibly localized piercing pimples) periodically:

Nipple Piercing with Gemstone BarbellI've had my nipple piercings for over a year now, and they're still healing, which is fine with me, however they keep forming bumps. The bumps will appear for awhile, go away, and then come back; it's been doing this for about 3-4 months now (and gets worse when i'm menstruating). I also believe that they may have migrated from the original position they were pierced in. I've considered retiring them for the past two months, but I'm just not sure if they're being fussy or if I should actually retire them. Any help you could give would be amazing!

I have read through the troubleshooting part of the Piercing Bible again to see what I could do to help these bumps; i've been very consistent with warm saline soaks, i've been massaging emu oil onto the area at least once a day, i've tried chamomile teabag compresses, one piercer suggested I try neem oil (which worked for a bit, but stopped helping after awhile), and I very briefly applied peroxide to the bumps (less than a week) to see if that would help them disappear. They do seem to get smaller and go away, every now and then, but they keep coming back.

Bleeding and Bruised Vertical Clitoral Hood (VCH) Piercing

I received a message from a woman who got a VCH piercing and she wanted me to evaluate it for her:

After checking out your website and researching this piercing, I went ahead and decided to go get one for myself!

I have seen other reviewers say they have sent pictures of their to evaluate if it has been done correctly, and since you are not in my area piercing, I went to another piercing place to have it done.  However. I  still want your professional opinion on whether it was done correctly.  Being such a delicate area, I want to know mine is done right!Bruised VCH Piercing

I know my piercer did use the NRT [needle receiving tube].  I do have concerns because he went through with the needle, then said the skin on my hood moved (which I know must happen at times) and had to pierce me again.  (You can see in the pictures, above the top ball where I think the first needle went through before he had to move it down.)  So this is where I lost a little confidence.  Afterward, I bled profusely for about 4-5 hours almost as if i had my monthly cycle which also worried me.  So I just want your opinions on this, if it's normal, and if the piercing looks done correctly to you!

The bleeding has stopped and I am in no pain, I have been cleaning it as instructed, but I don't feel any "heightened" sexual sensations at this point either.  Maybe that will come after healing?  I apologize for the bruising and some of the dried blood, as this piercing was done less than 24 hours ago and still has to heal.

I do hope they are close and clear enough and that the lighting is well enough for you to make a proper evaluation.  Thank you so much for taking the time to look.  You're awesome!

Best regards, A.

Surface Anchors or Surface Piercings

Hello Elayne,

I would really love to have your opinion and thoughts on my "future piercings". I have been contemplating a new piercing for quite some time now. I am thinking about getting four Micro Dermal Anchors on my chest. I will enclose a link/image to the exact placement of the dermals at the end of my message. I stumbled across your wonderful website after doing a lot of endless research. I think that it's awesome that you actually take the time to respond to all of us who message you in need of help or wanting questions answered ! Please forgive me as I have a few loaded questions for you ! I also wanted to say that after much investigation there is literally (or almost) next to no one in the state of North Carolina that I would remotely trust to do these piercings. After cross referencing with the Association of Professional Piercers and lots of thought, I have chosen to travel almost six hours to Immaculate Body Piercing of Columbia, SC. To my delight, I have just learned they are also on your list of Piercer Referrals!(Yay!).

I apologize ahead of time for this being so long. Sorry!

Healing Double Nipple Piercings

Below is some correspondence with a gentleman who was having trouble healing his second set of nipple piercings:

Dear Elayne,

First off, I want to thank you for all the things you've done for the piercing and body modification community. You are truly a pioneer and have helped so many of us along our journeys with your work and writing.

I have been having some trouble with a newer nipple piercing and have been unable to resolve the problems I've run into, so I figured that I would turn to the most knowledgable person I know of when it comes to piercings, you.

Male Double Nipple Piercing (Iron Cross)About two months ago I got my nipples pierced a second time, I already had a set of well healed and toughened horizontals for years.  The piercings were done complication free, tucked right behind the existing horizontals at the base of the nipple, possibly ever so slightly into the areola.  They began to heal relatively problem free and I commenced with my usual aftercare of daily Provon washes and twice daily sea salt soaks.
