Fantastic Feedback

I received this wonderful email from a reader:
I am writing to say that I have received my copy of your "The Piercing Bible" !  It arrived just before the weekend so I have not read it cover to cover yet.  Having looked around through it and peeked at a couple of "close to home" topics, I felt that I should write you. I am so impressed with you and your book!  As you know, I had expected it to be a good educational tool and I had expected to enjoy it.  However, it is more than I had planned - I love the way it is organized.  For now, my favorite aspect is that you've taken the time to explain each piercing in detail and included all pertinent information, not just rudimentary details. With my financial background, I appreciate attention to detail and this is terrific.  I am reading, with great interest, details on piercing body parts that I don't even have!  LOL! How silly am I? No kidding, this is a great book and I am thoroughly looking forward to reading every word.  I so love piercings and your book is a treasure trove of knowledge.  I hope you will have a very pleasant experience at your book signings.  Although I know you don't need my opinion to validate your work, I want you to know that I remain very proud of you. Best regards, Dawn

Educating About Genital Piercings

I was recently contacted by an interesting woman. She's a gynecologist (among other things) and she requested my help to answer questions about body piercing for a book she's writing:

Dear Angel- I am an OB/GYN physician, artist, and author, and I am interested in getting touch with Angel to discuss clitoral piercing for a book I am writing. My book (working title: Coochie Confidential- Questions You'd Only Ask Your Gynecologist If She Was Your Best Friend) is a book of Q&A about all aspects of women's health. The book will be published by St. Martin's Press in Fall 2010.  Should you be interested in answering these questions, I would be happy to credit you, quote you, and reference The Piercing Bible. One question that was submitted relates to clitoral piercing.

Library Thing

I signed up for a cool site called Library Thing. It is for people who love to read and they can interact with others who share their passion for books. There's all sorts of forums and groups and plenty of book reviews and all kinds of cool stuff. I set up a profile, and I was able to get an "author" button because some of the readers had my book in their "libraries." You can also connect with people who have the same books as you have in your library. Anyway, I noticed a review of The Piercing Bible that written by one of  the members. It started off:
This book is awesome, whether you're a professional piercer, regular piercee, apprenticing or just academically inerested.
I contacted him to thank him for the great review and he responded back to me:
Absolutely! I adore your book and will probably have to purchase a second copy, as I've managed to practically wear out the copy I already have. It was most useful on at least 2 of the papers I have to write for anthropology classes, this past school year! It's by far one of the most useful and informative books I've ever owned. Oh yeah! And kudos to Powell's Books, here in Portland OR, for having it IN STOCK when Amazon was still telling me that it was on order and not due to even be printed for another three months (that was back in March).

"Very Informative"

This is another great review, but I'd like to ask the reviewer where he thought The Piercing Bible fell short, since he gave me only 4 stars. I know that's not a "bad" review, and what he had to say was positive. My other reviews have overwhelmingly received 5 stars (17 of them) and only two of them were 4-star reviews, including this one. I'd certainly appreciate any feedback on how the book could be improved when I update it in the future.

"Absolutely Great!"

Yes, it is another 5-star review. This one is short and sweet:
5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great!, August 14, 2009

"Very informative with the best form of information...Purely straight forward. I love the in depth details that Angel gives to describe each piercing."

Piercing and Fashion

For me personally, piercing has never been a fashion statement. I was driven at a very early age to pierce my own body, and the inspiration seemed to come from deep within, rather than the pages of a magazine or anything I saw on TV. That said, I have always defended aesthetics as being a perfectly acceptable motivation for getting pierced. It was one of the many historical reasons for piercing among tribal and primitive peoples, and--of course--it is still common today. Still, it was a little odd to find The Piercing Bible shown on this site along with books on knitting, sewing, and Coco Chanel!

"A Must-Read"

I just found another wonderful review of The Piercing Bible on this blog:
Thank the powers that be for Elayne Angel! Her book, The Piercing Bible, is a must-read for anyone considering this art form as a career, anyone thinking of getting pierced, anyone who is already pierced and everyone in-between. Elayne leaves no stone unturned in this thoroughly researched guide to safe body piercing. She delves into the history of piercing and the effect this has had, and will likely have, on many generations, before exploring it in its current form as well as its future possibilities. From deciding what to pierce, to finding an accomplished and conscientious piercer; from hygiene issues to piercing trouble-shooting, Elayne has touched on it all. Being relatively new to the art, I found myself starved for solid, trustworthy information and, with decades of experience under her belt, Elayne shares a wealth of knowledge, dispels many misconceptions and offers sound advice from the effects your new piercing could have on society’s perceptions of you to lifestyle changes that might be necessary if you want to live in harmony with your piercing. The book also discusses different jewellery styles and sizes, equipment used during the different procedures, stretching of piercings, retiring of piercings, problems that may arise, and special situations such as breastfeeding and sex that may be compromised, or enhanced, by the piercing. The industry has waited a long time for this book and, after reading it, you might be able to tell your doctor a thing or two about infection control, blood-borne pathogens and cross-contamination.

A Piercer's Praise

I received this message on Facebook : hi! My name is Nycole and I have been piercing for 2 years in VA. I absolutely adore your book! I have also just really relished getting to learn so much from you from your blogs, videos, magazine columns, etc...I had a pretty inadequate apprencticeship and its been really cool, we have been revamping our shop and we are apply for membership for app within the month. We were just really out of date with sterility, jewelry, aftercare etc. But I just wanted to say thanks for all you have done for piercing. Our shop, myself, and our clientele have benefited greatly from it o man! I Thanks! Nycole ---

Captivated A Reader!

I had an email exchange with the gal who wrote a review on her blog: because she'd emailed me with positive feedback about my book and  I'd asked her to post a review on Google books and/or one of the bookseller websites:
I actually already wrote one on my blog (I write reviews of many books that I read) www.sosnowy.wordpress.com Your book is very well written. I read so much non-fiction for classes and often find it very difficult to pay attention, but your book captivated me just like fiction does. I am an aspiring writer (of novels), so I pay attention to language use.
I responded: I can't tell you how much your feedback means to me! Thanks so much for your support and for the wonderful review! I'm absolutely delighted. I knew the book would be informative, and that I'd given it my all, but I didn't really know how "readable" it would turn out. Wow, hearing you describe my book as "captivating" is more than I could ever have hoped for, to be honest. Coming from a writer (aspiring or otherwise) that really means the world to me. I wish you all the best with your own writing. Thanks again, Elayne

Wonderful Review on A Writer's Reading Room

I ran into a wonderful review of The Piercing Bible on this blog: "A Writer's Reading Room"
The name of this book says it all. Not only does Angel offer sound advice for all types of piercings, but she gives cultural history, pre and post care instructions, information about body type and compatible piercings, health risks and management, sex and piercings, and information about traveling through airports or visiting the doctor with piercings that cannot easily be removed. She even offers advice to the frustrated parent. These are only a few of the many topics Angel covers in this 300 page Piercing Bible–there’s even an index for keyword searches. I purchased this book on a whim, even though I rarely ever do more than flip through a non fiction book, but I sat down to read a couple of chapters and discovered that four hours had passed and I had read most of the book cover to cover. Elaynes writing is thourough and informative, and it has broadened my opinions and misconceptions I had of many body piercings. If you have been toying with the idea of getting a piercing, or have had many, or if you are a piercer yourself–this book will provide you with two decades of expertise from the world’s most knowledgeable piercer.

A nice synopsis of The Piercing Bible was posted in the Tattoo Gazette, with a bunch bunch of great comments. Check it out!

Post Your Own Review

I just got an email message from a reader:
Thanks so much! I picked up your book yesterday and read it (mostly) cover to cover this morning, which I never do with non fiction works. Excellent job!!! Thank you for taking the time and energy to put so much of your knowledge in print--and in such a comprehensive and not boorish manner! Sarah
My response: Wow! Thanks so much for the fantastic feedback on my book! I really appreciate every comment! I'm thrilled to hear you were able to zoom right through it so quickly. Could I enlist your aid in spreading the word? Would you mind posting a little review on one or more of the following web pages (it could be the same review): on here Amazon.com toward the bottom of the page are the customer reviews with the link that says "Create your own review" Also here on Google books next to the image of the cover is a link that says "write review" and/or here on Barnes and Noble Whenever you have a chance would be fine--no emergency. I really appreciate your support!
