Nostril Piercing Help

This inquiry (like so many others I post) was also from a Facebook Friend:

Hi Elayne,i got a question for u. I've got my nose piercing long time ago,a year...until now didn't heal,i always have this bump on top,red sometimes bleeding. All i use is H2Ocean and emu oil,but....nothing.This is my second time i've it done, and i use14k white gold .I have read in your book all about aftercare...but i guess something is wrong with my piercing or i do something wrong. Maybe i should take it out?

My reply:

Hi Kristina,

Have you ever tried a different material or jewelry style? Are you wearing a nostril screw? If so, was it custom bent to fit your nose? If it wasn't bent for you, then it is possible you're wearing a "right-bend" piece of jewelry on the left side of your nose (or vice-versa). Also, if the post is too short, or too long, that can cause problems with healing.

I'd strongly suggest you try a jewelry change before abandoning your piercing. Here's a section from The Piercing Bible about nostril screws:

Nostril Piercing: The Nostril Screw
The nostril screw is a stud modeled after a traditional East Indian design. The ornament displayed on the exterior rests atop a straight wire post that passes through the piercing; the tail terminates in a curl that rests flat against the interior of your nostril. This keeps the jewelry in place without requiring a backing. When properly sized and shaped to fit you, the jewelry is comfortable and is not visible inside your nose.

Nostril screws are less conspicuous than rings and they work well for healing, but only when properly adjusted to fit your nose. Pre-bent nostril screws do not take into consideration whether the jewelry will be worn on your left or right side, nor the indi- vidual thickness and shape of your nose. Ill-fitting nostril screws can cause serious problems, including embedding, tissue damage, and substantial discomfort. Your jewelry should be bent or adjusted for your anatomy.

Nostril screws set with gems are a very popular style for nostril piercings, and many of the stone settings are flat in the back, where they attach to the post. For the stone to rest properly on your nose, this, too, must be factored in with the angle of your piercing and the shape of your nose. On a nostril of average shape the same angle will often suit both a ring and a stud set with a gem.

Also, warm saline soaks are much more effective than a spray. Here's a brief passage from my book, The Piercing Bible--The Definitive Guide to Safe Body Piercing:

The Soak
One of the best things you can do for all healing or irritated piercings is a saline soak. A warm, mild saltwater solution irrigates, cleanses, and allows the cells to rejuvenate.9 Saline soaks keep the cells well hydrated while simultaneously flushing out fluid and cellular material that accumulate in the wound. This reduces crusting and helps pre- vent pockets of trapped matter, which can create unsightly and difficult-to-eliminate bumps. If this debris is not removed, it can impede healing.10 The warm water also opens capillaries and stimulates blood flow, which transports oxygen to the region, promoting healing.

This is not an invitation to swim in the ocean, where you might encounter numer- ous microbes, motor oil, and other hazards. The goal is to use a solution with a saline concentration similar to that of the human body. Either make your own by following “The Recipe,” opposite page, or use normal saline (a 0.9 percent sodium chloride solution).

See page 188 of my book for more information (and for the resources referenced by numbrer in the passage above).

Don't give up yet!

i have my septum peirced and just got it done. im sure im having surgery within the next month or two what do i do when it comes?

the bent part in my nose is facing down towards my feet, do i need to turn it so it faces up towards my brain . thanks please reply soon!!

Hello piercing god , I've just gotten a nose per icing with the the piercing gun so I'm assuming the nose ring she used is to small , I woke up the next day and you can no longer see the stem from the inside of my nose . Should I change it to a smaller one or should I wait a couple of days and she how the swelling looks . I think my nose is sort of fat !

Get to an experienced body piercer IMMEDIATELY to get your jewelry changed. If you don't get the earring out, you're going to end up needing surgery to remove it!

Stud guns should never be used on the nose--the posts are NOT "one size fits all" among other issues.

I have a list of piercer referrals in the "MORE PAGES" navigation to the right. Also, you can check the Association of Professional Piercers for a member:  http://www.safepiercing.org/locate-a-member/searchable-member-database/

hey elayne!

So i got my nose pierced about a month and a half ago and two days ago decided i no longer like it.  When i took it out i made sure to clean my face, hands, and the hole right afterwards.  For the entire next day my nose was fine and you could barely see the hole but the next morning when i woke up there was a blood blister directly on top of the where the piercing used to be. i at first attempted to pop it and nothing came out so i cleaned it with antimicrobial soap and have been soaking it in warm sea salt water but it hasn't changed at all.  Some things on the internet have suggested tea tree oil or something but i dont know what to do to make it go away, and quick.  The guy who pierced it said to ask you for advice so that's what i'm doing.  PLEAASSEEE help me figure out what to do to make this thing disapper!

Hi there, Got my first nostri piercing on Friday, and lucky me, got a cold on Sunday. Trying to be gentle. The post, which he bent after he sized it, etc., turned around and was pointing outside the nostril. I gently turned it around. Is it supposed to lay up against the same side that the piercing is on...inside the nostril? Also, is it normal to feel the end of the post when you "flex" the nose? It feels too long, even though he said it looked good. Thanks so much!

If you've given it a few days to get adjusted and the jewlry still isn't comfortable, you should return to the piercer for an adjustment.

Hi.  I am 5 weeks out from a nose piercing surgical steel that is bent like an "L" in my nose.  Everything was fine until about 3 days ago...it's red around it and now i'm noticing a little raised bump.  That stinks to begin with but not the main reason for this post...Im not infected, no pus, etc BUT definitely irritated. Now that the swelling went down i'm afraid the post is too long.  It sticks out sometimes to the point where i can see the post and i actually push it down to lay flat against my nose....could this be the reason for the irritation?  Is it too long and moving around too much?  Its an 18g, 2mm.  I've never changed it or anything, btw.  I only use the mild pump the piercer gave me in the morning and night - no scrubbing.

I'm also worrie about the bump forming..im afraid that is happening b/c there is too much room between the hole and jewelry.

also, will the hole get smaller once I change it to a 20g?  The whole seems huge.

Hi Elayne, I too as Kristina have a bump on the inside and out side of my nose!! I got the piercing on the 4th of July on the left side.. all was well until a few days after my baby bumped my face while sleeping with his head. then a few days later soreness and a bump on the inside which lead to an outside bump a few days later. i have been trying soaks and a little hydrocortisone cream? the soaks i have been trying to do faithfully but i work 12 hour shifts and its hard to get them in, but it has been 3 weeks and still have the bump!! should i try a jewelry change as you recomended? I stopped back where i had it pierced and the piercer said "oh its a keloid, pick it off". i was surprised by his recommendation. I also asked a friend of mine who is a PA and he says its a granuloma and you have to remove your piercing and you might have to have it surgically removed!! HELP!!!  i would appreciate any advise you can give me.. i really dont want to loose this piercing but I am getting discouraged. thank you so much......
